I have been an enthusiastic photographer since 1988 but having served my sentence as a working pharmacist I changed career and decided to study photography and digital imaging. I have practised a wide range of photographic techniques over the years in both film and digital, specialising in the creation of digital photo-creative montages.
The rapid development of digital imaging technology has enabled the photographer to exercise precise control over the final image. The integration of digital technology with traditional photographic principles has enabled me to be more creative and allowed me greater scope to express moods and themes in my images. I hope that this approach blurs the boundaries between photography and art and produces a final image that is unique rather than a photographic record of a subject.
Good image making combines a degree of technical skill and the ability to view the scene or subject from your own point of view. I strongly believe that image making happens in the mind rather than being a mere mechanical or technical process. Thus, when creating an image - from having the first concept through to visualising the image, then dealing with the technical capture, and finally through to post capture processing and output to print – your emotions, intellect and even personality play a role in determining the final result.
Recently I was invited to join the Watersongs Art Initiative which has enabled me to work for the first time with long established artists using a variety of media. The collective was created by the artists to promote the inclusion of public art in regeneration programmes. This inspired me to use the digital montage process to interpret and reflect the demise and regeneration of a local community and the history of the area.
In 2007 I was invited to undertake a residency at the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock. I intend through the residency at the Museum to develop my use of photo-creative montage and digital audio visual presentations, as well as other related techniques, in the wider context that the breadth and depth of the Museum’s collections and the wealth of knowledge and experience of the staff facilitates.
The outcome will be an exhibition that will feature the digital photo-creative montages and audio visuals created during the residency which I hope will present the Museum collections in a new medium for the modern age.
