Last Sunday I attended the opening of a group exhibition at Art de Caf in Glasgow that included work by three fellow Watersongs artists Pam So, Rosemary Beaton, and Mo Shanklin along with three other artists. This group spend a week in Iona painting every year and the exhibition featured some of the work from their stay in 2008. I have to say I really loved the girls work. It was all refreshingly different. As a fellow photographer I have a special interest in the work of Pam So and her images in this exhibition are very special indeed and have captured the mood and atmosphere of Iona perfectly.
This year I will be taking part in a Christmas Art and Crafts exhibition that is to be held at the Museum from 29th November until 20th December. There will be a wide variety of artworks on sale and there should be something to suit all tastes for that Christmas gift that is a little bit different.
I have been working on my pieces and I am very pleased with the result. I will be submitting two small companion pieces on the fantasy theme of this website. The third piece is a triptych of an abstract montage.
Many of the artists taking part are my friends so I am really looking forward to it.
Last night was the annual Inverclyde Myths and Legends Festival and fireworks display. I have a special interest in this event as I have been asked to supply the images for all the publicity material for the last two years.
I really enjoy being involved in this event as some of my spooky fantasy works are perfectly suited to the theme and I find it easy to prepare images to fit the brief. Of course it is also great to see your work splashed around on billboards, posters, websites etc. I really appreciate the opportunity to supply the images.
Time is marching on towards my exhibition and I have now started to seriously research costings. Starting point today was contacting Fresh Pixel Design who printed the canvas for me at the start of the year. I was delighted with the quality of the canvas and also their service so I would feel happy working with them.
As always, finding funding for the project is proving difficult and I am still actively seeking sponsors. Perhaps if someone with a large wallet reading this journal would like to spend some money on an innovative art exhibition they will get in contact with me!
It is full steam ahead making the test prints and making any amendments to the works. In some of the montages I have adjusted the colour palette as I felt a slight toning down was called for when I saw the test prints. I also decided some contrast between the pieces would make the collections more interesting. I have therefore created a night scene which I am very pleased with and I think it will contrast well with the other pieces.
I have now started to focus on the statement works for the exhibition as they are to be printed as soon as all appropriate arrangements have been made. I have decided to make some quite radical changes to these pieces. The individual elements have remained the same but the backgrounds for the Egyptian montages have been completely changed to give a more graphic effect which I feel is more in keeping with Egyptian art.
Today I attended a TAIT meeting and during the partners update session I reported on my progress with the residency. The members of the group made several useful suggestions as to ways I could progress the Ocean Terminal project and I hope to be able to follow these up after I have sent the first image files off for printing.
The curator is preparing some publicity for McLean Museum events in the coming year which will also include my exhibition. I have now come up with a title for the exhibition which will reflect the mood and feel of the work. The title is “Timewinds” with a strap-line of “Digital Recollections”. "Time" is self explanatory and "winds" reflects the magical movement of the Museum Objects from their original time zone by their metamorphoses into new and contemporary artwork.
The Christmas Exhibition at the McLean opened this afternoon and there was a large turnout of guests and artists. There is a wide variety of work in the exhibition - from silk scarves and handcrafted jewellery to traditional oils and watercolours. Truly something for everyone and at prices to suit all pockets.
I enjoyed meeting up with my friends and their work at the same time, which rarely happens, and everyone had a marvellous time.
I also took the opportunity of studying the hanging area and tried to place some of the residency works for my own exhibition in my minds eye. I am not sure whether this reassured me or not!
